Puerto Seguro

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you a law firm?

No. Puerto Seguro is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. We coordinate the process for you; all legal work — your will, any court or notarial filing — is performed by our partner notario in your region, a licensed notario público.

Do you mark up the notario's fee, the bank's fee, or the funeral home's fee?

Never. You pay third parties directly, at their price. We only charge for our own coordination work.

I already have a US or Canadian will. Do I still need a Mexican one?

In most cases, yes. A foreign will is difficult and slow to enforce against property, fideicomiso rights, and accounts held in Mexico. A Mexican will, prepared by a notario público, is the straightforward path for Mexican-situs assets. Your notario can confirm exactly how this applies to your situation.

What is a fideicomiso and why does the beneficiary matter?

A fideicomiso is the bank trust structure foreigners use to hold coastal property in Mexico. It names a substitute beneficiary who receives the trust rights if something happens to you — but that beneficiary has to be current. We check this as part of every Readiness Review.

What happens if my beneficiary designation is out of date or missing?

Ask your trustee bank directly about your specific fallback process — this varies by bank and we don't want to guess on your behalf. What we do know: keeping it current avoids the question entirely, which is exactly what a Readiness Review is for.

What does Family Support actually do when someone dies?

A coordinator verifies what's happened, opens your Ready File, and walks your family through the funeral home, Registro Civil, consulate, bank, and SAT steps — in their language, with daily updates — while a notario handles anything legal.

Is my information secure?

Your documents are encrypted, access-controlled, and only shared with your consent — including with the notario when needed for your legal work. See our Aviso de Privacidad for details.

Do you serve areas outside San Carlos and Guaymas?

Yes — Puerto Seguro is built to work anywhere in Mexico. The remote parts of the Readiness Review work the same everywhere; Family Support and the notario visit depend on a local partner notario being signed in your region. Our launch regions are the Sonora coast, Puerto Vallarta/Riviera Nayarit, and the Riviera Maya, with Lake Chapala/Ajijic, San Miguel de Allende, Mazatlán, Mérida, and Los Cabos/La Paz next. See Where We Work for current status, or get in touch if your area isn't listed yet.

What if I'm Canadian, not American?

Puerto Seguro works the same way regardless of citizenship. Consular procedures differ between the US and Canada, and we account for that in your plan.

These answers are general information, not legal advice. Confirm anything specific to your situation with our partner notario in your region or an attorney licensed in your home state or province.
